Hair Relaxer Litigation

Texas Hair Relaxer Litigation Attorneys

Representing Texans Harmed by Unsafe Chemical Hair Relaxers

For decades, chemical hair relaxers have been marketed as a safe and effective way to straighten textured hair. Such products have been especially popular among Black women, who were specifically targeted by marketing campaigns by the product manufacturers. However, recent research reveals a serious issue: long-term use of certain chemical hair straighteners may increase the risk of dangerous reproductive health problems, including uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, and endometriosis, among other health complications.

At Fertitta & Givens, we’re offering our representation to people across Texas who used chemical hair relaxers and later developed life-changing illnesses. Evidence may show that product makers failed to warn consumers of the risks — and we’re here to hold them accountable. Let us know right away if you or a loved one were diagnosed with a serious disease or cancer after using a chemical hair relaxer or straightener product.

NIH Study: What the Science Shows

In 2022, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) released a landmark study linking chemical hair straighteners to uterine cancer.

The study, part of the Sister Study that involved more than 33,000 women over 11 years, found that:

  • Women who used hair straightening products more than four times per year were more than twice as likely to develop uterine cancer than those who did not.
  • The link was especially concerning because Black women made up the majority of frequent users, even though the study did not find race to be an independent risk factor, suggesting that disproportionate use may drive disproportionate harm.

The NIH concluded that chemicals commonly found in these products — such as formaldehyde, phthalates, and other endocrine disruptors — may be contributing to cancer risk.

Potentially Dangerous Chemical Hair Relaxers

Chemical hair relaxers and straighteners come in many forms, including:

  • Creams and lotions
  • Lye-based relaxers
  • “No-lye” straighteners
  • Heat-activated treatments used in salons and at home

Most of these products contain hormone-disrupting chemicals, some of which have been banned in other countries due to toxicity concerns. While many lawsuits are still in the early stages, brands and manufacturers that marketed these products without proper safety warnings are already facing legal action. If you used a hair relaxer regularly for years and received a serious medical diagnosis after using it, you may have a legal claim.

Who May Be Eligible to File a Claim?

You may qualify to file a chemical hair relaxer lawsuit if:

  • You used chemical hair straighteners or relaxers regularly (at least four times per year in most cases)
  • You were later diagnosed with:
    • Uterine cancer
    • Ovarian cancer
    • Endometriosis
    • Another serious illness or cancer
  • You were not diagnosed with a similar illness before using the chemical hair relaxer
  • You have no or limited significant family history of these illnesses

Please keep in mind that the qualifications for filing a chemical hair relaxer lawsuit can change based on each case’s details. To learn if you can file a claim or participate in a mass tort, speak with our attorneys as soon as possible. We offer free, confidential legal consultations to help you understand your rights.

What Compensation May Be Available?

If your diagnosis can be connected to long-term chemical relaxer use, you may be able to seek compensation for your losses.

A chemical relaxer lawsuit can usually seek damages for:

  • Past and future medical expenses
  • Lost wages or reduced earning capacity
  • Pain and suffering
  • Permanent reproductive harm or loss of fertility
  • Wrongful death, in cases involving lost loved ones

It is believed that the chemical hair relaxer lawsuits will be mostly handled as mass torts. However, your claim will still be evaluated individually, not lumped into a one-size-fits-all class action. For this reason, the damages that we pursue on your behalf will be based on your specific losses and hardships.
